Marathon Kids
Marathon Kids is an initiative that sets children in primary schools a challenge to run a marathon over eight weeks. We were tasked with running around five kilometres every week since September. We did our running on the church green and we loved every minute of racing each other, encouraging each other, breathing the fresh air, and, of course, the break from our work! During the eight-week program we recorded our progress by writing how many laps we did on the green and if we ran our walked, and how much we enjoyed the running.
For the final kilometre we went on a bus to the National Athletics Stadium, Morton Stadium in Santry. When we got there, we were really excited. We got off the bus and waited in the stands for our school name to be called. We cheered on other schools and eventually it was our turn. We went to the starting line, which was quite muddy! We felt excited, squashed and eager to get going! It was cold that day, so that helped us to run a bit faster. We passed people walking their dogs and there was a photographer.
Finally, we got through the park and entered the running track of Morton Stadium. This is where the famous athletes of Ireland compete. We crossed the finish line, with aching feet, and received our wooden medals for completing our (first!) marathon!
It was exciting, exhausting but mostly lots of fun over the 8 weeks!

A huge thank you to Mr. Lowery and all the teachers in 6th class for organising and running the Marathon Kids program with our pupils.
